European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
