Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round League Cup match against the Magpies.
